Gothenburg - the city with the red lipstick

Since 10 years already I visit Sweden once in a year, this has family reasons and also because meanwhile I appreciate and love the people and the country.

Why? Well this I will tell you later.
Today you  get my recommendations what you need to see in Gothenborg.

Enjoy the read!

Nordstan - shopping shopping shopping

The Nordstan shopping mall.....a shopping paradise! Here you find everything your heart desires on 3 floors. The mall looks more like a shopping arcade because all the small alleyways which branch off from the main alley. And in all of them are again many shops.
When you leave the Nordstan and walk along the Fredsgatan, you will find many stores like Mango and the sport outfitters Stadium. The Arkadaen is a little and comfy shopping area where you can have a coffee or you stroll around in all the little fashion stores. Heading on to Kungsgatan you will find a labyrinth of side roads with many more retail shops. The heaven for all lovers of Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and other not so low priced brands is located in the Västra Hamngata. If you are more into second hand, then you need to go to "Myrorna“ at the Järntorget or to „Bepop antik“ at the Kaponjärsgatan. And at the Andra Långgatan you can find retro jewellery, you can buy furniture in the „Boutique F“  and  browse through comic figures at „Udda ting“.

The  Salu halls - smaklig måltid (enjoy your meal!)

Over 40 little shops are placed in the Salu halls (market halls), which offer everything from bread, fish, cheese, gastronomic specialities and spices from all over the world. Some restaurants also offer menues from faraway countries to reasonable prices.

A must for every gourmet!

The fish church - Feskekôrka

The fish church in Gothenburg isn´t only a tourist spot but also offers a high quality fish market, where you not only can buy shellfish and fish but also prawn salat or bread roll with fish.

But why is it called fish church?
Quite simple. The building resembles more a church than a fish market with restaurant.

The botanical garden - Please stay on public ways

The botanical garden in Gothenburg extends over an area of  175 ha of which the largest part is a nature reserve. 16 ha are garden area with more than 16 000 plants. If you can´t imagine anything with this hectar data, then let´s just say the garden is really very huge and it´s almost  impossible to see everything.

The garden offers the following areas: the stone garden. the japanese valley, the  rhododendron dale, the kitchen garden, the arboretum and the green houses. It´s hard to  believe  but the staff of the garden tavelled the whole world to get some of the plants you can see there.

One advice from me: Please stay on the public ways, otherwise you will end up in the middle of the nature reservate and you will realise that when you follow that way,  you will reach at another part of Gothenburg from where you need to take a train to get back to the botanical garden. :-)

Slottsskogen Park - I think I see a moose

Slottskogen is a 137 ha central park in the city and is also called "the green lung of Gothenburg". Actually the park is a little city forrest and it´s placed on some rocky hills. Here you can spend a whole day without getting bored.

Who also hadn´t the luck yet to see a moose in the great outdoors can watch them in the animal enclosures of the park.

Amusement park Liseberg

A visit at the amusement park Liseberg is highly recommended for families with children. It´s the biggest amusement park in Scandinavia and is in the center of the city. The park offers many attractions for children as well as for young adults and among it is a roller coaster which is a fully wooden construction.

In the beginnings the park was only open in summers but that changed in the year 2000. During christmas time the biggest christmas market in Sweden takes place there. Almost 5 million little bulbs illuminate the park then and create a beautiful atmosphere.

And why is it called Gothenburg- the city with the red lipstick?

Here´s the answer:

Because of the skyscraper  Skanskaskrapan or Läppstiftet,  which means "lipstick".

I hope you liked my report and I would appreciate your comments.

Next time I will tell you about the surrounding area of Gothenburg.

See you soon!

Your Honey
